Procrastination – There Is Always Tomorrow

If you were asked to choose one word to describe disorganization, not getting the work done, lack of achievement, or lack of self-fulfillment – that word would have to be “Procrastination”!

Or when we finally get around to doing them, we are under so much pressure, that quality simply flies out the window! I believe that all of us procrastinate occasionally. For example, when we decide to check our emails, rather than do that report that is due tomorrow; or when we avoid playing with our children, or making time for our wives or husbands, because of something we perceive to be more urgent?

Procrastination is part of human nature! But when it becomes a habit,or a consistent pattern in the way we act, it can have disastrous consequences. Tasks take on urgency they do not merit and you spend more time – not less – on them; rather than the higher priority tasks that will take the most thought, concentration and energy, and pay the biggest dividends.

Probably the main reason for procrastination is fear of failure. We want to succeed and we are afraid that we won’t do the task right – so we simply postpone it, leading to a rushed job, and increased risk of reduced quality because of time pressures.

The Power of Vision- the 2012 Olympics

olympic torch The Power of Vision  the 2012 OlympicsWe have all come into this world with gifts, or abilities, which we can use or not use as we see fit. Those who succeed will establish a vision, and a plan for achieving that vision, which they then will faithfully execute. The recently completed 2012 Olympics provide plenty of examples of people who have done just that -established a vision and pursued that vision relentlessly. They may not all succeed in claiming a medal, but they all will achieve success by simply being there, and competing with the world’s best.

During these Olympics there were many outstanding examples of individuals, and teams, who pursued their vision, and succeeded, whether or not a medal was achieved. They were Olympians, and their success was in competing with the world’s best. Of course each wanted to win, as a culmination to their vision of competing. But doing their best was what counted most! As someone once said, “The honor is in competing. The joy is in winning!”

Time Mastery Talent – What is it?Many years ago Bill Paige, a noted teacher-coach, opened his presentation with the words, “God does not create junk!” He went on to elaborate – saying that all of us have been given gifts or talents that allow us to succeed, and whether we use them, or not, is up to us. Many authors and speakers have underlined that whether we succeed or not, is to a very large extent- our choice!

No matter who you are, you have been given gifts or talents and, if you choose, you can develop them into a successful life. If you can conceive it in your mind, you can achieve it with the proper planning and action.

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, was once labelled by his teacher as being too stupid to learn anything. Later he is reputed to have said, “I have not failed, I have found 10,000 ways that won’t work”. Can you imagine how many times along that road he was advised to give it up – that he had invested enough time already, and “It just won’t work”.

Am I Too Old?

Am I Too Old Am I Too Old?    Recently I heard a minister speaking about his reaction to his retirement. He questioned himself, “Am I really retired?” He then asked, “At this time of life- am I too old?”

Do you find yourself saying “I am too old?” Is age your excuse for not doing things?

Edward Smith, motivational speaker, and author wrote,

“Don’t use “I am too old” for an excuse. People that were “too old” have accomplished many of the greatest achievements in the world. If you say you are “too old”, you are giving up growing and living, and it is just one more excuse for not doing something. Usually being at the point where you are “too old” means you have an incredible base of knowledge and experience and at the very least you have discovered the many ways NOT to do something. It would be a real waste not to use this for you and share it with others. You are never “too old” to be your best.”

Look at:

  • Frank Stronach, the 79 year old Austrian-Canadian businessman. As the founder of Magna International in Aurora, Ontario, and Magna Entertainment Corp., he is still receiving many accolades for his contributions to technological education, technical skills training and entrepreneurship.
  • Betty White, the 90 year old American actress, comedian and former game show host, was recently a guest host for TV’s Saturday Night Live. Now, 6,000 fans on Facebook have put forward the idea of her being the next host for the Academy Awards.
  • Bob Crossley, author, painter, and a 93 year old friend of mine (now deceased), still skied each year in Switzerland into his 90’s, because he believed he was able, physically, mentally and emotionally.  His style and technique might not be as great as in earlier years, but that did not stop him.
