Working with WordPress
What is WordPress?
WordPress started in 2003 with a single bit of code to enhance the typography of everyday writing. Since then it has grown to be the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day. It is far more than just a blogging platform. It has evolved to the point where it can be used as a full content management system, and with its myriad of widgets, plugins and themes, is limited only by your own imagination.
The important thing is that you are in charge! Using the WordPress software you will learn how to create a blog or a website that is easy to update, great for the search engines, and does NOT require webmaster skills. To use WordPress, you need a web host that meets the minimum requirements (we use HostGator), and a little time. WordPress is limited only by your imagination and your ability to learn.
1. iTHEMES MEDIA
iThemes Media, seeks to produce high-quality, search engine optimized WordPress web templates for small businesses, professionals and organizations to help them create and manage websites in an affordable way.
Their themes are not built strictly for blogs or to even be blogs. They are built to be, and run, entire small business websites – that might want integrated blogs to develop an interactive community around their products and services and find new customers via the search engines. Of course, you don’t have to use the blog function, but it can certainly become a great marketing tool in your arsenal.
My recommendation is Flexx. There are many design and colors to choose from, and it is easy to work with. If you are more experienced then I would try Builder. Check the Bulder video on their site.
In addition to providing high quality themes, iThemes has an extensive WordPress video tutorial section; and to help you with your questions, they also have an active user-to-user support forum – with two moderators who peruse the boards each day to help answer your questions or point you in the right direction to find them.
