To many, the road to success is a lot like a modern super highway, with people speeding merrily along, toward their life’s goal! But in reality the road to success is more often like a back country road, with many pot holes and obstacles that impede the journey and that make it much more difficult, if not impossible to navigate.
To expand on this analogy, if you want to embark on a journey, you first of all determine your destination, and then plan the best way, and quickest way, to get there. Much the same is true with your journey through life. You were given gifts at birth, and it is these gifts that you must now utilize to reach success in your life. But if you don’t know where you are going, you are unlikely to arrive.
Basically there are four keys, or steps, to this journey to success:
- First you must have a clear Vision of where you want to go, and/or the goal you wish to achieve. A free tool that will help you assess your goal in terms of your strengths and challenges, both external and internal, is the S.W.O.T. Model (for a short video on this subject click here to watch SWOT Analysis – Tool for Success)
- Secondly, you must have a Plan of how you will you will proceed toward your vision. In this plan you must identify those factors that will help you achieve your vision, and those factors that might hold you back. The anticipation of problem areas is really half the battle! Another free instrument that could help you in identifying these factors is the Force Field Analysis. (For a short video on this subject click here to watch a video about the Force Field Analysis)
- The third step is to put your plan into Action. This will involve the utilization of all those familiar time management techniques, which we so often ignore! The stock answer to any obstacle you meet is usually “I don’t have time for this!”. But you do have all the time there is, so you must set your priorities from your action plan, and continue moving forward.
- The fourth step, and probably the most important, is Feedback. None of us have all the answers, so the best way to achieve your goal is to get advice and feedback from the various groups of people you work with, and who have a stake in your vision/plan. This will help in ensuring that you reach your vision/goal.
Then, before moving on to further peaks or visions, take some time to celebrate your success with those people who have helped along the way. Celebrating your achievements is an important part of your long term success, and will solidify your relationships with your team.
